Substance Abuse Rehab – Finding Help & a Treatment Program

Substance Abuse Help

Drug addiction is present in the lives of almost everyone.  Whether the addict is a distant friend or a close family member, almost every person in today’s society has some sort of relationship with a drug addict.  Substance abuse spawns from a person’s dependency to drugs or alcohol and is characterized by intense cravings for the drug.  Drug addiction start as a voluntary act, it soon becomes an uncontrollable desire to use and obtain the drug of choice.  Drug addiction effects and disrupts all different parts of the addict’s life. A person’s lifestyle can change in a blink of an eye. They will lose their job, as a result of coming to work high.  They will not be able to take care of their financial responsibilities, because they usually spend all of their money on the drugs or alcohol they are seeking.  Their relationships with friends and family will be broken up, resulting from the constant need for the addict to get drunk and high.  Finding substance abuse help is not always an easy task.  There are many different approaches to helping a drug addict. Because a person’s life is disrupted by addiction in so many different ways, treatment is not easy.   Effective treatment will not only get the addict of drugs, but they will also give the person the tools to return to a normal way of living.  Simply getting the addict clean is not enough. A person must learn to confront the problems and consequences of the problem caused by their drug addiction.  Addiction treatment must not only get a person to stop using drugs, but it must also teach them ways to maintain a drug free life style.  They must learn how to be productive members of society.

One type of treatment for substance abuse incorporates the use of medications.  During withdrawal, a person can be given medications which help suppress the pains and discomforts caused from the withdrawal from drugs and alcohol.  After withdraw there are certain medications use to help diminish the cravings for the hard drug.  Suboxin, methadone, and buprenorphine are popular drugs used to help get people off of heroin or morphine.  For alcohol treatment there are a few FDA medications used such as naltrexone, disulfiram, and acamprosate.  Although medications can be effective in suppressing the pain and stress associated with drug rehabilitation, a person can easily become dependent on these medications, creating a whole new issue in itself.

Behavioral treatments are used after the withdraw process to help people change their attitudes and behaviors.  If done correctly, behavioral treatment can give a person the tools they need to confront their problems and live as a normal functioning member of society. There are several different approaches that can be used in behavioral treatments such as outpatient treatments and residential treatments, varying in times.

There is no single treatment that is right for everyone, but substance abuse help can be found.  When looking for a drug rehabilitation facility, one must research the different types of programs.  A drug addict’s life can be saved if they are given the appropriate treatment.
